True friends tell you the things that no one else will, usually the things you don't want to hear about your weight and your hygiene. Acquaintances don't know you well enough to mention your cankles or to call your flossing manic, making them better to have around.
The only drawback is that acquaintances usually don't lend you money or drive you to and from your colonoscopies.
I can't drive you to your colonoscopy after all. I have diarrhea that day.
