If an idea is popular, it usually means that it's right for everyone, like skinny jeans. A rise in popularity means that an idea is good, sort of like how you can rely on the truth of preset stereotypes rather than analyzing things for yourself. Being a follower instead of a leader takes a lot less thinking and work, leaving more time for online Scrabble and psychic readings.
